You Have To Start Somewhere!

"I want to run a marathon!" A common goal for someone who wants to achieve physical greatness. A marathon is an admirable achievement for anyone. Those who used to be athletes or have always dreamed of doing something truly fulfilling in the physical arena may opt to dedicate themselves to running 26.2 miles.

The training involved in running such a distance is not easy. It takes planning (goal setting), grit, motivation, sometimes a coach, and going from where you are now to where you hope to end up. You print a plan that covers months leading up to the race you have selected. You skim over the distances from week to week. Your eyes land on a "long run" in the month leading up to race day. Your stomach churns, you feel anxious, and then you think, "I can't do that...." You no longer think you can do what you were so excited to finally accomplish.

The insurmountable activity required to run a marathon for someone that doesn't even go for long walks means they won't even try. I've been there. It's disappointing and at times, a relief. Knowing it was so hard and you won't have to feel that discomfort can be a good feeling. But the greater feeling is following through and standing at the finish line of what you intended to do. And intent, true intent, is a legitimate indicator of follow through.

Start somewhere! Reverse engineer what it will take in order to finish the race. First run is 2 miles. Can't run 2 miles? Walk it. Can't walk 2 miles? Walk 1 mile. Can't walk a mile? Put your shoes on and walk out the door. Go for however long you feel you want to go, and head home. You are now vastly further from where you stood yesterday. Incremental changes day after day, building on the previous accomplishment. Small changes day after day equal massive changes over time.

Sounds easy enough. And a coach can make it even easier. Want to accomplish physical goals you've only dreamed of? Contact me and we can discuss how we can work together to make your physical goals a part of your daily routine.
